It appears far fewer students will be missing the first few days of class this year.

Last year, nearly 500 students were kept out of school because they lacked the required immunizations and physicals.  Even though registration for District 186 students is just getting underway, School Board President Mike Zimmers says the push to get the word out to families is paying off.

“I hate to get too optimistic but it appears we will have fewer students missing school,” says Zimmers.

District 186 is again partnering with the city’s hospitals and the SIU School of Medicine who are providing volunteer health professionals to ensure kids are getting up to date on shots and their required physicals when they register for class.

“I know the work our staff did in informing parents was phenomenal in getting students where they needed to be,” according to Superintendent Jennifer Gill.
