A former Southeast High School bookkeeper has been sentenced to 4 years in prison plus ordered to pay full restitution after stealing more than $100,000 from the school’s activity fund.

Amy Day, 44, started working at Southeast in July 2011, and was arrested last October. Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser says the sentence is appropriate.

“It sends the message to the community that you, frankly, can’t steal from the kids,” says Milhiser. “That’s what this individual did.”

Day’s attorney wanted her sentenced to four years of probation, District 186’s lawyers wanted five years in prison.

Day has been ordered to pay back nearly $136,000, but so far hasn’t paid back any despite having a part time job since she’s been out on bond. She’ll report to jail Friday.
