A familiar name is running for Springfield City Council.

Ernie Slottag, who served as city spokesman from 1995 to 2011, says he’ll run against Kris Theilen in Ward 8. Slottag says he wants to get back into city government to help people — it’s not a decision that comes lightly.

“I don’t think it’s a decision that people just jump into without considering all the aspects of it,” said Slottag, noting there’s considerable effort expended on campaigns, no matter how large or small.

Incumbent Kris Theilen, appearing on the Ray Lytle Show shortly after Slottag, said Slottag should run if he thinks he’s a good candidate — but Theilen told Lytle someone with city government connections is trying to oust him and other incumbents. He wouldn’t say who.

“Not on the air, it’s not right, it’s not fair,” Theilen told Lytle when pressed to reveal the person.

“You said several wards?” Lytle asked.

“Several wards,” Theilen replied.

“Is this someone who’s politically connected?” Lyle continued.

“It is,” Theilen said.

Theilen, who at one time mulled a run for city treasurer, says his constituents appreciate what he does.

“I think my record stands for itself,” he said. “I think that a lot of people appreciate the time and care I put into things.”
