The Logan County Zoning Board of Appeals has voted not to recommend a proposal to rezone over 320 acres of farmland for coal waste storage.
Although the zoning board voted against the Viper Mine plan Thursday, the decision whether to approve it is ultimately up to the Logan County Board. An attorney representing the Elkhart Village Board says the village opposes the proposal because of the intended site’s proximity to a local water supply. He says the village has passed a resolution in protest.
Local residents are also concerned that the coal ash could taint the air.
