A committee consisting of faculty, citizens and, law enforcement officials has been discussing ways to make Springfield District 186 schools more secure. Superintendent Jennifer Gill provided an update to school board members Monday night.
She says money is available in the school budget to upgrade security.
“The one thing we know that will make a difference is security cameras in all our middle and high schools,” Gill says. “At this time, only one of our middle schools has a security camera system which was purchased with a grant. It was purchased more than 15 years ago.”
Other recommendations from the committee include more outdoor lighting and handheld wands.
Gill stresses the most effective security measure is early intervention with students who are at-risk. The board approved a training program to ensure all teachers and security employees are certified in early intervention.
