If Springfield seemed like it had less people in it Friday, that’s probably because they all got on Interstate 55 and headed north for the big Chicago Cubs World Series Parade and rally.
Count Nan Kording, Calendar Editor at the Illinois Times, among them — though Kording says she knew better than actually go to Grant Park.
“There are kind of three points throughout the city where you could catch the parade. We decided to catch it at Wrigleyville, maybe make it over to Grant Park,” says Kording. “We had friends at Grant Park who got there at 6am, ridiculously early, and they sent us pictures of the line. It was long and muddy, and they were nowhere near close. So, we stuck close to Wrigleyville.”
Kording says you can’t blame her for wanting to be there.
“What we had wanted to do initially was come down for the actual games. We knew there wasn’t any way we could afford the tickets,” says Kording. “We knew we had to be here for the parade. It was kind of a last-minute decision. It was something we always wanted to do. It was 108 years to get to this point. Who knows if we get to have this chance again? We had to take it.”
Kording, whom you hear regularly on the WTAX Weekend Newswatch, says she’s pretty much been hooked on Cubs baseball the last 11 years, and got engaged at Wrigley Field. She says Friday’s atmosphere was very fun.
