Now that former Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan has been indicted, questions continue about a special investigative committee convened in 2020.
The committee, chaired by then-State Rep. and now Speaker Chris Welch (D-Hillside), dissolved without making any findings and without even hearing from Madigan. In DeKalb Thursday, a reporter asked the governor if, in hindsight, that was a mistake.
“In a way, I’d say the reverse of that,” said Pritzker. “That is, I think they were deferring to the U.S. Attorney and to the federal authorities to allow them to make a case, and they clearly did.”
Welch Wednesday summed up the committee’s role just that way; that the matter should have been in the hands of the U.S. Attorney all along.
Deplorable and abhorrent are words the governor used to describe what Madigan is accused of doing.
