You have heard of the “TikTok Challenge.” But now there’s a challenge to the popular social media site.
Attorneys general across the nation, including Illinois’ Kwame Raoul, are investigating the site for its addictive tendencies. The problem, says the office’s consumer protection chief, Susan Ellis, is whether TikTok is violating Illinois’ consumer protection laws.
“We are investigating TikTok for providing and promoting its social media platform to children and teens, despite its use being associated with physical and mental health harm to these particular users,” said Ellis.
She said prolonged use of social media can lead to low self-esteem and body image concerns.
