On Wednesday SPD Chief Ken Scarlette presented Officer Taylor Sullivan with a Certificate of Commendation for her dedication, compassion, and professionalism displayed on a call involving a young girl in crisis.
On March 20, Springfield Police officers responded to the 1100 block of Reservoir Street for a suicidal
juvenile female that had armed herself with a knife.
Upon arrival the girl was not responsive to the officers initial efforts to persuade her to put down the knife. Officer Sullivan was able to develop a rapport with the young girl, and with her calm dialogue, the girl released the knife.
The girl was taken to hospital for examination and treatment. Police say Officer Sullivan displayed calm, patience, and genuine empathy toward the girl to gain her trust and that led to a peaceful resolution.
The commendation says Officer Sullivan went above and beyond and in doing so she saved a young girl’s life.
