An alert ambulance driver smelled smoke in the early hours and alerted Springfield Fire Dept. who had to send out a full General Alarm to take on a major fire at a vacant 2 story commercial building.
The call came in around 2:45 Saturday morning.
At least four fire crews answered the alarm at 609 E. Princeton and they were able to contain the fire to the rear of the building.
Police say the building had once been used for Mine Safety Training but had been open to trespass for some time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
