Tomorrow, (Sat) on the 96th anniversary of the designation of Route 66, Google will be celebrating the Mother Road on its homepage with a new video Doodle, which takes the form of an animated sketchbook and tour across America.
Google artist Matthew Cruickshank begins his nearly 2500 hundred mile journey in Chicago, stopping in Joliet, Springfield and Granite City along the way.
As he drove along the Mother Road in his ‘72 Chevelle, Matthew says he pulled over to the side of the road whenever he spotted something interesting to paint or sketch it for this project. The Google Doodle and behind the scenes footage is available for download or viewing on YouTube.
In addition to the Google Doodle, travel experts from the Illinois Department of Tourism are sharing Route 66 travel tips as a part of their “Middle of Everything” campaign that launched last week.
