Three months into the job, Springfield police chief Ken Scarlette has put together a road map and has shared it with the city council.

“We’ve identified four paths that offer a layered approach to continued success,” Scarlette told aldermen at their most recent meeting. “They are described as: reduction and prevention of violent crime; community engagement; leading the law enforcement profession; and improving recruiting and retention.”

Scarlette said Illinois State Police are offering an incentive to join, and that is the sort of thing the city must compete with to gain a reputation as the team you want to join.

Another priority is to counsel and mentor young people so they do not fall into a life of crime.
