Law enforcement will be cracking down on drunk drivers on Illinois roads during the holidays.
Drunk driving deaths in Illinois increased by 15 percent last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In an effort to reduce that number, hundreds of local police and sheriff’s departments will be increasing patrols and conducting roadside safety checks through the end of the year. If you notice the difference on the roads, then Illinois State Police Lt. David Byrd says the cops will have done their job.
“It’s all about visibility,” Byrd said. “How many cars can we get there, how long can we get them out there for, and that’s where the impact comes into play.”
Officers also will be setting up enforcement zones to check for distracted drivers and drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing seat belts.
