What was to be a celebration for supporters of Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade came to not much on the steps of the Illinois State Capitol Saturday Morning.

But Tom Usle was there. He’s the Regional Coordinator for Students for Life of America.

“I’m certainly glad that Roe was overturned,” he said. “Basically all this really means is that abortion legislation will go back to the states.”

Usle acknowledges, however, that in the short term there will be more abortions in Illinois as women will cross state lines from places like Missouri, Kentucky, and elsewhere to get the procedure.

“It really is unfortunate,” he said. “Looking at Illinois specifically, things are only going to get worse here.”

On the legislative side, Usle’s group works to find compromise while still protecting the sanctity of life; on the social side, he says he wants women to know that there is a community of support for them should they choose not to have an abortion.

Usle attributed Saturday’s low turnout to a lack of lead-time for planning the event, not a lack of enthusiasm for the cause moving forward.

To that end, those interested in knowing more about Usle’s  organization can visit studentsforlife.org. For women seeking free pregnancy resources, he says they can visit standingwithyou.org.
