While the numbers are not as good as they could be, the financial picture for Springfield-area residents is better than much of the rest of Illinois.

According to the US Census Bureau, the region saw some key financial indicators improve and, Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce President Stewart Sandstrom says unemployment indicates how the region bucks the trend.

“The truth is we perform better than the rest of state, in terms of the unemployment rate and, we are one of the best metro areas in the state consistently,” Sandstrom says.

The statistics indicate the unemployment rate in the latest American Community Survey is among the lowest of all metropolitan areas in Illinois.
