The University of Illinois will increase its downtown footprint as the Board of Trustees on Thursday approved the purchase of a property in that will become the new U of I Springfield Innovation Center.
The three-story, 26,400-square-foot building is located at 401 E. Washington, caddy corner to the site of the now demolished municipal parking structure.
It will provide a regional center for technology and research, commercialization, business incubation and acceleration, workforce development, and policy research.
UIS officials says the new Innovation Center will help the university drive innovation and economic development in the city and the region.
The university expects to move to the new site in 2024.
