Members of the Springfield school board are still discussing whether a tax abatement for the Legacy Pointe sports complex is a good idea.

“It starts to add up,” said board member Micah Miller. “I mean, consider this is in totalĀ  probably $1 million that we’re losing as a district.”

School district attorney Rob Cross responded, “But if they don’t build it, Springfield Clinic won’t build, and the area won’t build up, and you can sit on the property taxes you are receiving now, which are minimal, or you can take a short-term risk.”

The school district would then get access to the complex’s sports fields. A non-binding letter of intent is expected in two weeks, when superintendent Jennifer Gill expects the board to vote on the proposal.

Legacy Pointe developers say with no tax abatement, there will be no sports complex.
