There are steps homeowners can take to avoid getting soaked by a big plumbing bill.  The unprecendented cold weather the region is expericiencing is resulting in some frozen and burst pipes.  Gary Hurley from CWLP says there are some simple measures that will help.

“The best thing to do is stop from the cold air getting in.  If you have holes in the walls where the pipes are located, get those holes fill those up as best you can. Make sure the walls and foundation are insulated.  If you have a crawl space, make sure the crawl space vents are closed,” says Hurley.

Hurley also suggests keeping faucets on at a slow trickle.  Foam wrap for pipes is also available at most hardware stores.  He says more tips and energy saving advice can be found on the CWLP website.
