Moving Pillsbury Forward will be tearing Pillsbury down.

The group’s president, Chris Richmond, announced Wednesday that demolition will commence soon on a two-story, 50,000 square foot warehouse on the abandoned property.

Richmond, who was a year old when his father started working at the plant, says it was an “economic engine” for the community, and, for as ugly as it is now, as long as it has been decaying and empty, and as harmful as it has been to the environment, some people will find some sadness in its removal.

What would replace the old plant on the Northend is yet to be determined, but Richmond says anybody who wants to put light industrial near a rail line should pay attention.

And, to quote a driver on 15th Street during Richmond’s news conference, “About damn time!”
