Safety messages from the National Weather Service talking about the sub-zero temps, steady winds/wind gusts (40-50 mph) that make travel dangerous for all of Illinois…especially with the blowing and drifting snow throughout today/tonight.
- Clear your ENTIRE windshield of snow (see attached graphic)
- Defrost your entire windshield (front and back) before you head out
- Allow plenty of room on the roads for snowplows
- While warming up your vehicle, make sure your exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow
- Mittens offer better protection than gloves (bec gloves cool individual fingers quicker)
- Hypothermia is can also cause memory loss, disorientation, drowsiness, and poor mobility
- Most animal/livestock deaths in winter storms are caused by dehydration. Have a good water supply available
- Clear the area (at least 3-ft of snow) around all fire hydrants to assist your local Fire Departments
- Do NOT use the oven to warm your house
- Do NOT use portable generators indoors. Always outdoors.
