Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI dies at 95

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has died. The Bavarian-born theologian whose conservative Catholicism earned him both critics and supporters and who shocked the world by suddenly resigning the papacy after just eight years 

He was 95.

Benedict, the first pope to voluntarily give up the pontifical reins in nearly 600 years, spent his final years at the Vatican in a refurbished monastery.

Benedict was the longest-living pope, having surpassed Pope Leo XIII in September 2020.

The Vatican press office has said that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for the faithful to pay their respects.
