Sangamon County deputies suspect a Riverton man was expecting an delivery through the mail — nearly two pounds of marijuana.
The U.S. Post Office contacted the Sangamon County DIRT, Drug Interdiction and Response Team, after a damaged package started smelling of marijuana. The suspect, 39 year old Shawn Hamilton of Riverton, picked up the package after attempts to deliver to his home failed.
Police say Hamilton refused to let them search his house and wouldn’t give them more information. He was arrested and charged with posession of cannabis over 500 grams and under 2,000 grams.
The 997 grams of marijuana has been sent to the ISP Crime Lab for further investigation.
