Bruce Rauner expects to become the Republican nominee for governor after today’s primary.
Rauner has held double digit leads over his opponents in opinion polls for several weeks. He’s confident enough to already be looking ahead to the general election campaign.
“We’re gonna win the race, in my view, and then we’re going to beat Pat Quinn, that’s the critical thing,” Rauner said. “Pat Quinn is the most inept governor in America. He’s failing the people of Illinois. The reason I’m running is not to criticize my opponents, it’s to go after Pat Quinn. He is failing the people.”
State Sens. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) and Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) are also publicly saying they expect to win.
State Treasurer Dan Rutherford doesn’t appear confident about his chances after sexual harassment allegations led to him tumbling in the polls. His campaign has taken the unusual step of not allowing media to attend his election night event in Pontiac.
Gov. Pat Quinn has a Democratic challenger, anti-violence activist Tio Hardiman.
