Although it still early in the planning stage, the 183rd Fighter Wing could be assigned a new mission.
Colonel Ronald Paul, wing commander, says the Pentagon is looking to see if the unit would be a good fit for a high-tech role for the military.
“Right now, nothing has been decided. We are in the very early stages at looking at possible consideration for a cyber-security and intelligence mission at the 183rd” says Paul.
He says the final decision could be a year away but says the unit already has members that are trained in network security. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says he is pushing for the mission to be assigned to the Springfield base in addition to their current mission of servicing fighter jet engines.
