A multi vehicle crash on I-55 at southbound milepost 89 in Sangamon County has left one woman dead and two other people hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
It happened Tuesday night around 7:30 when a 44 year old man driving GMC Sierra entered the southbound lanes heading in the wrong direction.
The driver crashed into two other vehicles before overturning.
A 35 year old woman from North Carolina driving a Mercury Sable was killed. A 54 year old female passenger of a Toyota Corolla was taken to an area hospital with life threatening injuries.
Immediately after the three vehicle crash a Freightliner semi-trailer drove through the crash site but that driver was uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police. They say charges are pending.
