Federal officials say more than 217,000 Illinois residents chose health plans in the new insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released final enrollment numbers Thursday. The federal report also shows Hispanics represent 9.5 percent of the Illinois enrollees who volunteered their race or ethnicity. Hispanics are the state’s largest ethnic group, making up about 16 percent of the population.

The administration hasn’t said how many of the enrollees were previously uninsured or how many have paid their premiums. In Illinois, an additional 287,000 have enrolled in expanded Medicaid coverage.
