Springfield Police issued 70 tickets and towed three cars during this year’s snow emergencies.
Public Works Director Mark Mahoney says his department doesn’t tell traffic wardens to issue tickets unless there’s no other option, though.
“Generally, it’s pretty straight forward., if you’re on that snow route we try to give as much warning, try to be as proactive as we can in finding individuals,” said Mahoney. “But it depends on what’s going on.”
Mahoney says if a car’s in the way and has already been ticketed, for example, it will likely be towed.
Mahoney says Springfield residents are getting better at snow emergencies — in some cases moving cars off downtown and other streets even if there is no emergency. He suggests cars on side streets also be moved, even though there aren’t snow emergency routes in place.
It can sometimes take city plows a couple of days to get to side streets.
