Even before Sacred Heart-Griffin played their state semi-final game, the school’s boys basketball team got a shout-out of support from up the street and Mike Zimmers, a District 186 Board member.
SHG Principal Kara Rapacz responded after the Cyclones won it all in a double overtime thriller on Saturday. “That’s awesome because we are all one community, and one of the very first people who sent me a text as soon as the game ended was Jennifer Gill. So, we all work together. We’re all in it for our kids. I couldn’t be happier.”
The Cyclones defeated Metamora 53 – 50 in a game that brought SHG its first state title in basketball.
What’s next for SHG Head Basketball Coach Tim Allen? “Right now . . . a vacation. But I think we can be in the same situation next year. We bring everybody back except Big Mike [senior and team captain Michael Utinski], but I think we’ve got a lot of guys who can get better also.”
At an on-campus celebration Sunday, there was a lot of excitement from someone who knows a thing or two about winning state championships. SHG’s Head Football Coach, Ken Leonard. “It’s what we’re about. Multi-sport athletes. I think it’s terrific. This is unbelievable. This is fantastic.”
