US Senator Dick Durbin and his opponent in next month’s election, State Senator Jim Oberweis, tried to differentiate themselves in a debate.
According to one political expert, it doesn’t appear either candidate drew blood in that debate held in Chicago. Dr. Kent Redfield of the University of Illinois-Springfield says he thinks Durbin is successful in one aspect…..he isn’t part of the Chicago machine.
“He (Durbin) comes across as someone who is an Illinoisian. He isn’t from Chicago. He comes from downstate,” says Redfield. “We didn’t learn a lot. It was a basically a repeat of the typical Oberweis and Durbin negative commercials.”
Durbin is out-pacing Oberweis in fund-raising and polling. The two will again debate next Wednesday.
