The city’s taking another swing at developing the empty space the YWCA occupied in downtown Springfield. Springfield is applying for a Main Street Illinois grant and, as part of that, submitted an artist’s rendering. Mayor Jim Langfelder describes what’s in it:
“It’s an activated space, building on what was previously presented, but with the Levitt concert series, I think everybody understands the importance of activating that space and the enjoyment it can be,” said the mayor. “It takes a look at having an area for water fountains, and that could be converted to ice skating in the winter as well as a concert venue space and also have amenities, restroom related.”
It’s an idea that could enhance the quality of life in town – but not enhance anybody’s tax coffers.
