By a 6 – 3 vote with one abstention, a variance to allow mixed-use development of the Wyndham advanced (again) to the full city council.

The Springfield Building and Zoning Commission had previously advanced the measure, but with a degree of support that required a supermajority of votes from the city council.

Wednesday night’s vote ensures that only a simple majority will be needed at the October 18th meeting for the project to move ahead.

A buyer from New York, David Mitchell, aims to convert up to 275 units into market rate apartments, leaving 125 hotel rooms. Up to $25 million is needed for renovations to the interior and exterior property, which occupies some 390,000 square feet.
