A barn fire at 7135 Old Jacksonville Road in rural New Berlin around 1145 Friday morning brought crews from Loami, Springfield, and Chatham in to support the New Berlin Fire Dept.
When crews arrived the structure was fully engulfed in flame. Ammunition stored in the barn detonated, according to SPD Fire Chief, Brandon Blough.
A 3800 foot hose had to be deployed to get water to the remote location. There were concerns about a nearby propane tank and a residence less than 50 feet from the fire.
The fire was extinguished but one firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for signs for overexertion. His condition is unknown at this time.
