A community leader made a bold accusation Tuesday, at the first city council meeting since the revelation now-former Off. Aaron Nichols is connected to vicious hate speech online.

“We know he was not the only one,” said Sunshine Clemons, leader of the local Black Lives Matter. She called on the police to “proactively identify employees with behaviors and beliefs similar to Nichols.”

That capped a night on which all aldermen praised new chief Ken Scarlette for his handling of the case, swiftly removing Nichols’ police powers Friday. Nichols resigned Tuesday.

Scarlette said the actions attributed to Nichols are “deplorable,” and more than one council member noted “he didn’t miss anyone” in the hate-fueled posts on social media.

Clemons did not identify the other SPD officer(s) who are racists.
