Nearly 700 pints of blood from Glenwood High students, parents, and neighbors were donated during this year’s Blood Challenge resulting in a $1,000 scholarship from Springfield Clinic.
The Central Illinois Community Blood Center’s Tara Matheson says the annual contest is key to the center’s operations.
“25 percent of our annual blood supply comes from this challenge,” says Matheson. “Whether it be student donations, parents who come out and donate, community members who graduated from the high school that want to support the school and the scholarship.”
Glenwood placed first in the “extra-large” school category. Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville won the small school category with 244 participants, North Mac won in the medium school category with 733 participants. Williamsville won the large school category with 487 donors.
The $1,000 scholarship given to a Glenwood student will be awarded later this month. Overall, the contest netted nearly 12,000 pints of blood.
