While Springfield gas prices continue their habit of spiking between 30 and 40 cents at a time, prices are still lower overall than they were a month ago.
Bill Flieschli of the Illinois Petroleum Marketers Association says retailers are trying to get rid of their summer blend gasolines before they can’t be used anymore.
“The changeover to winter gasoline… you have to get rid of the summer gasoline,” says Flieschli. “Like anything else, if you have something at the end of the year that you have a lot of, you’ll reduce prices to move it along.”
He also credits fierce competition amongst Springfield gas stations, which makes prices go artificially low for a time before they spike back up to around the national average.
