A facility and its programs that caters to more than 100 disadvantaged Springfield kids came close to shutting down a few years ago.

Springfield Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Bill Legge says thanks to a 35-thousand dollar grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the organization can now expand its programs.

“Our vision tends steer towards providing a world-class club experience. An experience where our kids can grow and flourish become responsible young adults,” says Legge. “That cannot happen with a world-class facility.”

Legge says State Senator Andy Manar helped secure the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant that will be used to bring the kitchen up to code, remodel the gym and upgrade the security system at the South 15th Street Facility.
