Car-deer accidents are on the way down, one percent from 2012 to last year.

“This is part of a long-term trend to reduce deer-vehicle accidents from peak years in the mid-2000’s,” says Chris Young, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. In 2004, the staet recorded 25,847 car-deer accidents.

In 2013 the total was 15,328, down from 15,495 in 2012.

Actually evaluating things is tricky, Young says, as the threshold to report an accident has changed from then – $500 damage – to today’s $1000.
