Carbon emissions aren’t going down. In fact, a University of Illinois professor says it’s quite the opposite.
“The emissions were going down because of covid. We shut down all of the transportation and industrial and other activities. Starting last year, the emissions started increasing. This year, the emissions have been increasing at a much higher rate,” said Atul Jain, a professor of atmospheric sciences. “Once the economy opened, the industrial, transportation, and other activities started increasing at a higher rate, and that is causing higher emissions.”
Jain participated in research that resulted in publication of the Global Carbon Budget 2023. He says carbon emissions are now 1.4 percent above pre-covid levels
