The Village of Chatham is set to pay Springfield $700,000 for early termination of a water contract.
The Village Board approved the agreement late Tuesday; Springfield aldermen have already approved it. The ordinance says $500,000 will go toward damages to the city, and the other $200,000 will go toward leasing land on which a pump station is located.
The village’s contract with Springfield was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2013 but Chatham cancelled it in May 2012 when it brought its own water plant online.
