When Joe McMenamin was an alderman, he said things people didn’t like. That part hasn’t changed, as he made his fourth straight appearance at the public comment mic Tuesday, this time to talk about salary proposals for the police department.
McMenamin wanted more, though, than the customary five minutes to speak, as he had a handful of topics on his mind.
“Really,” he said, “it’s kind of a disgrace for a former alderman to be treated this way. I’m very disappointed.”
McMenamin’s remarks – about what he called a pension spike for cops – brought a quick response from chief Ken Scarlette (pictured).
“What’s disgraceful,” said the chief, “is assuming the men and women who put this uniform on day in and day out to protect this city only do it for the money.”
The police contract, four years in length but retroactive almost two years, passed nine-nothing, with Ald. Roy Williams present.
