It appears as though a major Springfield road project will get underway this summer, but not everyone’s on board.

Planners have long sought to make Stanford Avenue a major east-west thoroughfare by connecting it to Dirksen Parkway; the city council begins discussions this week on a nearly $436,000 contract for preliminary design work. But Ward 6 Alderman Cory Jobe has concerns.

“Is this really feasible to be doing this when we’re looking 20 years down the road when we’ll have to upgrade and maintain when we already have Stevenson Drive” Jobe asked. “But city planners and county planners think this is a good approach.”

The first phase will connect Stanford between Fox Bridge Road and Taylor Avenue and should get underway this construction season.
