U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth has given birth to a baby girl.
A statement says the baby was born earlier this week and named Abigail O’kalani Bowlsbey. Duckworth says former U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii acted as Hawaiian elder and selected the baby’s middle name.
She announced her pregnancy in September on NBC’s “Today” show as part of a segment about amputees from the Iraq War who have recently had babies or are pregnant. Duckworth lost both legs after the Black Hawk helicopter she was co-piloting was shot down in Iraq in 2004.
