A former Illinois prosecutor newly accused of suffocating his first wife in 2006 told investigators he found her dead in bed but never called emergency responders or offered her life-saving measures.

That’s according to transcripts of a coroner’s inquest five weeks after 38-year-old Cory Lovelace’s death in the family’s home in the western Illinois city of Quincy.

The transcripts, obtained by The Associated Press and the Quincy Herald-Whig through an open-records request, offer the first glimpse of Curtis Lovelace’s version of how his wife died.

An autopsy and the coroner’s jury ruled the cause of Cory Lovelace’s death inconclusive, leaving the case open until Curtis Lovelace was indicted on first-degree murder charges last month.

Lovelace has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed on $5 million bond.
