Springfield Aldermen didn’t even have to talk about appointing their former colleague, Tim Griffin, to become the next city council coordinator.

They put it on next week’s debate agenda, even though there was no discussion this week. Griffin says he doesn’t have any big plans for the office immediately — he just wants to get his feet wet.

“I’ll have 20 working days to go over and learn every facet of the office that may not have been clear to me as an outsider looking in,” Griffin said, who resigned Wednesday in anticipation of the appointment.

The city council coordinator is a full time position, whereas aldermen themselves are part time. The coordinator organizes the council’s activities and acts as a liaison between the council, its constituents and various department heads. Griffin is excited to do what he likes to do, but without political pressures.

“You don’t have to get involved in running for races, campaigning, raising money etc.,” he says. “I’ll actually just get to do the part of the job that I like the most.”
