The crime news in Springfield is relatively positive, as police chief Ken Scarlette updated the aldermen Tuesday.

“Part I index crimes were down in the city of Springfield four percent over 2021. At a time at a time when you hear crime is up across the country for various reasons, locally our crime was down slightly,” Scarlette said, crediting the men and women on the street. “Specifically, sex assaults down 21, robberies were down, aggravated assaults and aggravated batteries were down, burglaries were down, thefts were down.”

Scarlette adds there have been two arrests in last summer’s triple homicide on South Tenth Street.

What’s more, the department is now hiring in an attempt to get up to full staff.
