Concern over class sizes dominated the debate over whether Southern View should be included in a plan to combine Hazel Dell and Laketown schools into one new building in Springfield.

Board member Erica Austin said, “Please make sure that the class size will remain twenty. Average size.”

Superintendent Jennifer Gill responded, “Not sure we can promise twenty, but we will do our very best. When you look at (combining) three schools, that would be our goal. But if there is a big housing boom, we would have to consider that. But we will always bring back our class sizes, and that is a negotiated item.”

The vote was 6-1, with Micah Miller opposed. Later Monday, Miller was elected the board’s vice president, with Tony Mares re-elected president.
