A building that has stood for nearly 100 years just south of downtown Springfield is nothing but a heap of bricks now.
The city has torn down the Knox Flats building at 7th and Cook Streets after a deadline passed for the owner of the building to demolish the long-vacant structure.
The buiding was deemed a safety hazard and officials with the Elijah Iles House, which is next door, have long feared the crumbling three-story building could collapse onto that property.
There are no immediate plans for the lot . The suburban Chicago developer who owns the property has not been available for comment but will be billed for the demolition costs.
