A major road construction project is getting underway Monday on Springfield’s northeast end.
State and, to a lesser extent, city crews are starting work on the much anticipated Dirksen Parkway expansion between Clear Lake and Ridge Avenues.
“There’s a section that remains that’s basically a two lane,” says Springfield Public Works Director Mark Mahoney. “What they’re doing is expanding that out to a five lane section, putting in some sidewalks. You’re starting to see a lot of that with the weather breaking, they’re getting underway with some of the work.”
Mahoney says the state will take the lionshare of the nearly $10 million project, with the city helping with some sidewalk and sewer work. The work is expected to take a couple of years.
