With a unanimous vote, the Springfield school board decided to take Lincoln’s birthday off the school calendar and instead combine the day with President’s Day next year.

Superintendent Jennifer Gill says students will get more out of the day by attending class.

“There is a multitude of ways to celebrate Abraham Lincoln and his importance in our community without taking the day off of school’” says Gill.

In other action, the board also agreed to dismiss school one hour early each Wednesday to use the time for teacher development. The new schedule will begin when classes resume this fall.
