The former Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Allison Arwady, is headed to the CDC in Atlanta to lead the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Dr. Arwady will be responsible for leading the CDC’s efforts nationwide to prevent overdose, violence, suicide, and other injuries.

“I am honored to join the CDC in tackling some of the most pressing public health issues that face our communities today,” said Dr. Arwady. “During my time leading Chicago’s Department of Public Health, I saw the power of using local data to drive public health action and I look forward to translating this experience to a national scale.  From overdose to violence, this country is in crisis, and we must meet the crisis with strong public health approaches that center evidence and equity.”

In her former role in the Windy City, Dr. Arwady worked to increase access to mental health support and embedded mental health professionals into 9-1-1 response. She starts with the CDC in mid-January.
